A Day on a Narrowboat, London

In the summer of 2024, while visiting London, we spent a day on a friend’s narrowboat. Here are some things I saw as we glided slowly along the canal, between sunshine and downpours, locks and bridges. The day ended in a pub in the countryside, dirt from the towpath slowly drying on the soles of our sneakers. Later, a cab ride to the next station to catch a train back to the city

Interior still life on a narrowboat windowsill: plant, ceramic pot, shells, and tools by a rain-speckled window.
Detail of a small yellow boat with worn paint and a square window, docked beside overgrown bushes.
Three Birra Moretti cans placed on a rusty red canal lock lever, with damp grass in the background.

Reflected arch of an old brick bridge in calm canal water.
Silhouette of a house with a bird perched on the chimney at dusk, framed by trees under a cloudy sky.
View across a still canal at sunset, with golden trees reflected in the water and rooftops of houses nestled among trees in the distance.
