Aalto House and Studio, Helsinki
Enjoy some photographs I took during a tour of Alvar Aalto's stunning house and studio in the neighbourhood of Munkkiniemi.
Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most renowned architects, is celebrated for his unique and modern designs. Although his buildings are spread across Helsinki, Aalto's house and studio left the biggest impression on me during our trip to Helsinki a few years ago. The two buildings are located near each other in the Munkkiniemi neighbourhood in the Western part of Helsinki.
At The Aalto House – Home To Alvar and Aino Aalto
Conceived in the 1930s by Alvar Aalto and his wife, Aino Aalto, the building was built as a home for the couple, but it also served as a studio at that time. Aalto House blends traditional and modern elements and uses natural materials such as wood and brick to create a sense of warmth and tranquillity. The house is also a testament to the work of Aino Aalto, who significantly contributed to his architectural practice. She was also a skilled designer in her own right, and her work can be seen in the furniture, textiles, and glassware that she designed for the house.
Studio Aalto
Studio Aalto was built in 1955 when the studio in the Aalto House became too small. Here, Alvar Aalto worked on many of his most famous projects. The building is an excellent example of Aalto's signature style, which combines functionality and aesthetics in a harmonious way. The studio features a distinctive wave-like roof and large windows that flood the interior with natural light. I guess the most photographed part of Studio Aalto is the studio space with its high ceilings and abundance of daylight, but trust me, it is even more stunning in person.
The house and studio are open to the public, and visitors can take a tour to see firsthand the innovative design and functionality that Aalto was known for. Find more information on the Alvar Aalto Foundation website.
