Homemade Granola

Standing in the store, looking at ingredient lists of the many Granolas they offer, frustrated me. So many of them listed refined sugar as one of their main ingredients – those made with alternative sweeteners, like honey or maple syrup, tend to be expensive. So, I started making my own Granola at home ages ago. It is simple and quick; you don't need to spend twenty Swiss Francs for 350g of Granola. Plus, making Granola at home gives you complete command over the sweetness and additional ingredients you might want to add. Just stock a few base components you can buy in bulk in your kitchen and dedicate 15 minutes of your Sunday evening to making Granola for the upcoming week.

The following recipe is a good base I developed in the past years, but you can add more things, like crushed banana chips or cocoa nibs, if you like. Also, feel free to experiment with the amount of maple syrup and honey – you can leave out the latter if you want to enjoy a vegan version.

Ingredients

  • 300 g rolled oats

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 100 ml maple syrup

  • 2 tsp honey

  • A pinch of vanilla

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • Almonds and other nuts, crushed

  • 100 g raisins (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 150 °C.

  2. Add all ingredients apart from the raisins into a bowl and stir well.

  3. Line a baking tray with a baking sheet. Spread the mix onto the tray.

  4. Bake in the oven for around 15 – 20 minutes.

  5. Remove from the oven, add the raisins. Let it cool before storing it in an airtight container.

  6. Enjoy with yoghurt or milk and some fresh fruit.
